Introduction Neuroscience Psychodynamics According to Swartz and ONeill, personality can be defined as a complex and dynamic set of psychological characteristics, unique to one person, such as motives, behaviour and cognition. Wolpe argues that mental activities are partly in ones conscious and partly in ones unconscious, which is out of reach, this theory is the same as Freuds idea of the conscious, preconscious and unconscious mind (Wolpe, 1981). There has always been a so-called ââ¬Å"Battle of the Sexes.â⬠Humans have existed in a gender binary system with specific roles allotted to men and women for much of history, and its reach affects almost all aspects of our lives. Even in present-day 2014, in an era when it is becoming widely accepted that we are not limited by the roles that our predecessors were pressed into, the ramifications of this binary system are still limiting us. For this project my group members and I, as seven women each pursuing different careers and degrees, wanted to explore the gender disparity that exists in the workplace, and how each of our careers are likely to be affected by this problem. We found that across the board, working women are likely to earn only about 78% of their male peersââ¬â¢ salaries. Failure of Reconstruction of African Americans Essay After the Civil War, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments brought great hope for change in the South. For over 10 years gains were made. Reconstruction officially abolished slavery in all areas of the United States; gave citizenship to African American and federal and states laws applied equality to blacks and whites; and gave blacks the right to vote. However, as quickly as these gains had come, blacks were being surrounded by many hostile whites, thus these gains were then vanished. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, by the House on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, abolished slavery as a legal institution. Most of the schools were built in poor condition, and the schools were segregated. Their schools didnt receive proper school supplies and their books were out of date if they had them at all. Leaving the black student with the knowledge that wasnt up to par as the other white students their age. The Freedmens Bureau had inadequate funds, was unable to discontinue most poverty, and it failed to prevent the emergence of black codes. The bureau was terminated in 1872. Although in 1865, several southern states passed legislations creating black codes. Depending on the state, these code restricted blacks from owning there own property, and restricted them of where they could reside to live. The codes also establish a curfew for blacks, and forced them to work as agricultural laborers or as domestics. Luckily, the black codes were quickly eliminated when in 1866, a group of Northern congressmen, helped with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The Act gave blacks the rights and privileges of full citizenship. Even though slavery was abolished, the freed slaves still returned to their slave master for work. In June 1866, Congress passed the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, and it was ratified in 1868. The 14th amendment initially gave all slaves United States citizenship. Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. US Constitution Amendment 14. With the passage of the Amendment, Congress also provided that Southern states could not be readmitted to the Union until it ratified the 14th Amendment. All of the states except Tennessee refused to do so. But by 1868, the remaining 10 states also ratified the 14th Amendment. During reconstruction blacks were also able to participate in the political process. During the conventions held in 1867 and 1868, blacks helped write new laws and repeal black codes. Red Convertible And American Culture In the short story "The Red Convertible," by Louise Erdrich, the author, contrasts the old way of life versus the new. Erdrich does this through metaphorical symbols: the color red, convertible, summer trip, and the "fancy" dance Henry performs before his death (Erdrich p. 468). In the story, the color red symbolizes many things. The convertible is red. Lyman also said his brother, "had a nose big and sharp as a hatchet, like the nose on Red Tomahawk" (Erdrich p. 467). Also when the brothers took their final journey Lyman says, "We started off east, toward Pembina and the Red River" (Erdrich p. 467). The color red, in this story, represents Henry's will to be free. The convertible appears in a bright red because, while driving the car, Henry feels trapped by the white man's war (Erdrich p. 467). By returning to the "Red River" Henry regains his spiritual freedom. According to The American Heritage book of Indians, the "Red Sticks" were and "anti-American faction" that fought to keep the white man out, and their heritage strong (p. 221). With this information, the "Red Sticks," and the color red, represented in the story can be linked in their feelings with "anti-Americanism" (The American Heritage book of Indians p. 221). Lyman says, "He said he wanted to give the car to me for good now, it was no use" (Erdrich p. 468). By Henry giving Lyman the red convertible, he is foreshadowing his death. In the Chippawa culture gifts are given to the family of the deceased (The Chippawas of Lake Superior p. 16). A "remnant of the deceased" was kept, "wrapped in birch bark," this "spirit bundle" was then kept for a year and later given to the family (The Chippawas of Lake Superior p. 16). Lyman knows that Henry is preparing him for Henry's death by giving him the car. Lyman states, "No way. I don't want it," referring to the car (Erdrich p. 468). Lyman refuses this gift because he does not want Henry to die. The "red convertible" also represents a "curative charm" (The Chippawas of Lake Superior p. 19). In the Chippawa culture, a charm was given to the injured or diseased. This charm was used in many ways to: "stimulate love, attract wealth, insure a successful journey, and to counteract evil" (The Chippawas of Lake Superior p. 19). The charm consisted of an artifact that represented the individual or a "figurine" (The Chippawas of Lake Superior p. 19). The car was Henry's charm form Lyman. Lyman states, "I thought the car might bring the old Henry back somehow" (Erdrich p. 466). Lyman could see Henry was sick, so by reconnection Henry with the car, he thought the Henry would get better. To understand why the brothers took tow trips, one to Alaska, and the other at the end of the story, the Nomadic lifestyle of the Chippawas must be examined. The Chippawas led a "seminomadic" life, dependent upon the seasons (The Chippawas of Lake Superior p. 10). At the beginning of the story, Henry and Lyman venture off for the summer. The brothers end up in Alaska, which symbolizes their search for "new hunting ground" (The Chippawas of Lake Superior p. 11). The final journey, that the boys embark on, represents Henry's return to nature. Lyman identifies Henry's feeling by stating, "When everything starts changing, drying up, clearing off, you feel like your whole life is starting. Henry felt it too (Erdrich p. 467). When Henry and Lyman reach their final destination, something comes over Henry. Lyman identifies this change when he states, "I think it's the old Henry" (Erdrich p. 468). However, Lyman doesn't understand Henry's next move when he says, "He throws off his jacket and starts springing his legs up form the knees like a fancy dancer...He's wild" (Erdrich p. 468). To understand Henry's "fancy" dancing, the reader must be aware of the cultural ties the Chippawa have to dancing. Broadly defined, information literacy is a set of abilities whereby person recognizes when information is needed and how to reach out to the information. It is exactly the opposite of lack of information ââ¬â one having too much information. There are some good study skills and information literacy skill is to be learned by students in order to succeed in education. And the third is the skill of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in line with current technology, distance education students have mastered the skills to learn independently through ICT. And the last is the skill of making reference to expand knowledge in a particular subject. iii. Leadership Skills In addition, leadership skills are also needed by future graduates. The success of a business or a rise and fall is based on leadership. This criterion is also very important to be dominated by undergraduates, as one of the few important skills to master. G-III generated in 1989 total sales of $98.78 million. A strategy that has helped the company generate revenues at different price points is the use of multiple brands. The underwriter price obtained by Oppenheimer was $0.91per share. I believe the fees that Oppenheimer negotiated were reasonable. The $0.91 per share price was equivalent to a 7% commission. 7. Was $13 an appropriate price for G-III? What was the intrinsic value of a share of G-III? The intrinsic value of a stock can be defined as the actual value of the firm which may be different that the market value of the shares of a company. There are several metrics that can help an investor determine the intrinsic value of a company. The book value of G-III can be calculated by subtracting total debt from total asse ts (Little). Prior to the IPO the book value of the company was $18,923,000. The book value per share of the company was $4.07 (18923000 / 4644144). The market to book ratio assuming the $13 price is the market price was $3.19. The earnings per share of the firm in 1989 was $1.28. The price earnings ratio is calculated dividing the market price of the company by its EPS (Garrison & Noreen). Based on the $13 IPO price the price-earnings ratio of the company is $10.15. Due to the intrinsic value of the company I believe that the firm got a good deal by selling the stocks at $13, since this price is three times higher than the book value of the firm. 8. How would picking the wrong comparables influence estimates? Choosing the wrong comparable can distort the information which can lead to making bad decisions in regards to the valuation of G-III. One of the problems the company faced when it was choosing comparables was that most companies in this niche industry were not public which ma de it hard to find information regarding the industry financial performance norm. The problem with choosing wrong comparables is that it can undervalue or overvalue a firm. If the analysis undervalues the firm the company would be selling the stock at too cheap of a price.
